Girl, 15, on gun, ammo charge

A15-year-old girl was among two people arrested Monday following the seizure of a semi-automatic pistol and several rounds following an operation by members of the Joint Anti-Gang Task Force in the Kingston Eastern Police Division.

According to the task force, the girl and a man were held after the driver of a Toyota Wish motor car fled when he was stopped by the police about 4:30 pm at the intersection of Windward Road and Mountain View Avenue.

The vehicle and both occupants were searched and a 9mm pistol with a magazine, loaded with rounds, was found.

Both accused, police said, are to be questioned and later charged. Their identities are being withheld.

In the meantime, the Joint Anti-Gang Task Force said it is concerned with the increased exposure to violence of children by adults.

“Recently the task force commenced school intervention sessions in an effort to sensitise children about the constant exposure to violence and the risks involved. These intervention activities are designed dissuade children from joining gangs and getting involved in criminal activities, while at the same underscoring their importance in helping to fight crime,” the task force said.

It promised to continue its engagement in educating at-risk youth and vulnerable groups, even as it targets guns, gunmen and gangs.
